On a high note!

A recent do hosted by husband-wife duo of Sunil and Krishika Lulla saw both Bipasha Basu and Neil Nitin Mukesh take to the mike and put their Bipasha Basu vocal talent to good use.

But while a gorgeous looking Bipasha excused herself preferring to lip synch to singer and Miss India Earth 2003, Shweta Vijay’s melodious songs, Neil couldn’t resist the singer in him take over as he regaled the audiences with his singing that would’ve made his grand-dad the legendary singer Mukesh very proud.

The rock band ADZ - The Rising formed at the initiation of producer Viky Rajani and music director cum lead vocalist Gaurav Dasgupta — and comprising of members Divendu Mukherjee, Roshan, Shweta and Mizo — had everyone cheering as they belted out several numbers. Director Jehangir Soorti and Sophie Choudry too were seen enjoying themselves immensely, swaying to the beats through the evening.

Nastiest Bollywood Breakups

The divorce rate in Bollywood may not be as high as its US counterpart, but the Hindi film industry definitely has its share of nasty breakups. Here are the top ten.

As the 'Slumdog' star Freida Pinto makes the news for her unceremonious dumping of long-time boyfriend. We look at Bollywood's darker side.

Freida Pinto, an aspiring actress till a few months ago, is today India's global face. After walking the red carpet at the prestigious Golden Globes and the BAFTAs, she is all set to appear at the Oscars, but there is one problem. A certain Rohan Antao to whom she is either engaged or married claims that he doesn't even know he's been dumped while she says she's never heard of such a person. But some pictures floating around say something else.

If we speak about unceremonious dumping, Deepika isn't far behind Freida.

Rumour has it that the budding actress dumped her boyfriend Nihar Pandya soon after she landed the 'Om Shanti Om' project.

Long before the world officially knew about Ranbir as the man in Deepika's life, it was Yuvraj Singh who was rumoured to be Deepika's beau. It was also said the Deepika met Yuvi's mother who loved her and then all of sudden, there were pictures and magazine covers with Deepika and Ranbir with words like 'Truly, madly, deeply'.

It is inevitable for Ash and Salman to feature on a list of nastiest Bollywood breakups.

In one of the ugliest and most public splits that Bollywood has seen, Ash and Salman called it quits after two years of romance, accusations of coercion, assault and the likes.

Another terrible breakup was between Abhishek Bachchan and Karishma Kapoor.

Even before Abhi entered Bollywood, he was engaged to Karishma. However, the engagement broke due to inexplicable reasons and the Bachchans and the Kapoors swore never to see eye-to-eye again.

The Akshay Kumar-Shilpa Shetty breakup is also a dark mark over Bollywood.

There were accusations of cheating and of some serious defamation on both sides. However, it seems the two have worked things out and have moved on in a way that they can share a workspace again.

Chhote Nawab Saif Ali Khan has had a few bad breakup experiences. After years of marriage and two kids, Saif and wife Amrita Singh called it quits. Rumour has it that things turned ugly when Saif froze their joint accounts and created other monetary hassles for Amrita.

Saif's other high-profile romance was with Italian girlfriend Rosa Catalano. No one quite knows what went wrong, but she did make some public statements saying she didn't know Saif was married before they started going out.

One of Bollywood's most-talked-about breakup till date is between Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. The two did a number of films together and their 'relationship' was the talk of the town for a while, especially after the casting of both Rekha and Jaya Bachchan opposite Big B in 'Silsila'. Things obviously turned ugly because now they don't even acknowledge each other.

Finally, the Shahid-Kareena breakup is also among the controversial splits of Bollywood.

There were accusations of Amrita Rao and later Vidya Balan coming between the two. Kareena's quick next romance with Saif was also attributed as a reason for the breakup.

They have however decided to be mature about it, and agreed to complete the last film they were working on together before they split.

Celina Jaitley alleges rude behaviour at Delhi airport

By Joginder Tuteja

Mumbai, Feb 16 : Celina Jaitley says she had a harrowing experience with the airport authorities in New Delhi when she was going through the security check for her morning flight to Mumbai.

In the city for a special Valentine event, Celina Sunday went through body frisking and her belongings being scanned. However, she was shocked after realising that her expensive state of art iPod and Blackberry were scratched while quite a few other things in her bag were broken.

"I agree that authorities there are doing their duty and we too are completely cooperating with the security measures. It is for our own benefit and I understand that we should comply with them. However, who gives them the right to mishandle things belonging to others? It was heartbreaking to see my stuff in a bad shape. Both my iPod as well as Blackberry have lost their sheen due to callous attitude of men who were doing the scan," Celina told IANS.

Worse, the cops who were apparently responsible for the damage, were found smiling even as Celina was complaining against them.

"These guys don't know how to behave with women. I went up to the officer in charge and all he could say was 'Sorry'? Also, they told me in no uncertain terms that they couldn't repair what was broken. Moreover, the guys who did it were grinning in front of him. What a shame! Someone ought to teach these cops how to behave with women", she said.

It wasn't just the material loss that angered Celina. During the same time, she also saw an old female passenger being pushed around. When she approached the officer in charge, all she got from him was a casual 'sorry'.

Celina is thinking of approaching higher authorities and apprise them about what transpired with her at the airport.

"I was not only angry with them for breaking my stuff but for their misbehaviour with other women. They are there to secure us and not to humiliate, insult and manhandle us, especially women. They are misusing the power of uniform everywhere now-a-days. At the end of the day we are paying passengers and they can't break our things, insult us and indulge in indecent behaviour," she said.

Though there wasn't any major showdown at the airport post Celina's outburst, women around her were certainly appreciative about her courage to voice her displeasure.

"True, the women there were thanking me and one of them even said that I did what they couldn't have possibly done in fear. Well, nice to hear this as a compliment, but my request to all womenfolk out there is - 'Fight for yourself and raise your voice in events like this'. Till the time we don't come out in open and let the authorities know that they are there to help us and not harass us, such shameful things would continue to happen."

US student crowned Miss India Worldwide

Durban, Feb 16 :  Valentine’s Day was very special for American communications student Nikkitasha Marwaha when over 2,000 people cheered as an international panel of judges named her Miss India Worldwide 2009 at a glittering function on the beach here.
Australian honours student in sleep research Kanchan Verma, 23, was named the first runner-up Saturday evening and Sunaina Bhoendie of the Netherlands, a 20-year-old business management student, was placed third.

“It’s a surreal feeling, which just shows that if one perseveres, anyone can achieve what they want if they go for it with a passion,” 19-year-old Marwaha told IANS after she beat 24 other entrants from every corner of the globe at the 18th version of the international pageant started by Dharmatma Saran of New York.

It was the second consecutive pageant held in South Africa after one in Johannesburg last year.

All three winners were hopeful that Bollywood doors would now open for them, like it did for several of their predecessors, with both Marwaha and Verma citing actress Madhuri Dixit as their role model.

“Madhuri is the epitome of what dancing should be, and she had definitely inspired my dancing,” said Marwaha, who brought the house down with her dance.

She started her dance with a pot on her head and then ended as she stepped onto a thali (plate) on the floor in frenetic movements.

Whittled down to five finalists who each had to answer a question from the judges, Marwaha also impressed as she explained how she would choose between a modelling career or a family life.

“A modelling career is fairly short, about five to ten years, so I would choose that and then give it up for my family,” she said.

Marwaha, who received her crown from last year’s winner Shagun Sarabhai of Mumbai, told IANS that she wished she had been asked the question that another finalist got about whether recently-elected US President Barack Obama was an inspiration.

Agreeing with the answer from Pamela Mangroelal of Suriname, Marwaha said Obama’s election had set the pace for Indians across the world to show that they could also rise to high positions, wherever they found themselves in the diaspora.

“Obama’s promise of change are not just empty words. He will show in his four years in office that he can do what he said he would and serve as an inspiration to all, including American Indians,” Marwaha said.

“The amount of talent that the entrants show every year just keeps improving,” Saran told IANS, commenting on the performances as diverse as Kubra Sait of Qatar doing stand-up Punjabi comedy to all kinds of dance combinations.

“The 25 countries participating this year was a record and I am confident that we will have 30 next year,” Saran said.

He said there was a strong possibility of a hat-trick for South Africa as the venue again next year to coincide with celebrations here of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first indentured labourers from India.
“We have also had keen interest from South America and New Zealand so that will ensure that the Miss India Worldwide Pageant has been to every continent within the next few years,” Saran added.

Nandita Das, Mahesh Bhatt attend KaraFilm Festival in Karachi

Islamabad, February 16 : Bollywood filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and actress Nandita Das graced the second-last day of the KaraFilm Festival in Karachi, Pakistan.

The two of them are known to be the “oldest supporters” of the Kara festival.

Pakistani newspaper the News says in one of its reports that Das and Bhatt were welcome signs, and a massive statement of commitment from the neighbours across the border.

While speaking at a press conference held at the Arts Council, Bhatt and Das said that the High Commission had the knowledge of their association with Kara, which is why it was very easy for them to get a visa.
Bhatt even revealed that his visa arrived within an hour, said the newspaper.

The filmmaker said that the Governments of India and Pakistan knew that he had attended the last four KaraFilm Festivals.

Bhatt and Das credited the festival for providing a great forum to interact with like-minded people from different parts of the world, especially during troubled times, when the exchange of people and artistes becomes important because they are part of the peace process.

Hasan Zaidi, the chief organiser of Kara, said that the reason some Indian films could not be shown at the festival was because distributor refused to release their films.

Das’ film Firaaq, which was screened on Saturday, was brought over by her own efforts, and was yet to be released in Indian cinemas.

Das said that had it not been for Kara, she would not have met Mehreen Jabbar and never would have become part of Ramchand Pakistani.
She also expressed her desire to work with Pakistani directors, and hoped that a good script from the country would find its way to her.
