The 16-year-old Brit-born student schooled the rest of the top 12 on what it takes to electrify an audience, with his rendition of a 30 Seconds To Mars song launching Mastin into the worldwide trending Twittersphere.
It was a spectacular way to launch the competition proper, with Guy Sebastian's charge impressing the judging panel.
Girls mentor Mel B exclaimed "holy nuts'' after Mastin's appearance. Rival judge Ronan Keating lamented the strong showing, confessing: "I wanted that to be terrible but it was absolutely brilliant."
Natalie Bassingthwaighte, charged with mentoring the over 35s, also praised Mastin: "if Australia hasn't fallen in love with you already they will after that.''
Sibling trio Audio Vixen also impressed with a version of Coldplay's Viva La Vida, while Cleo Mitchell overcame technical difficulties to deliver Christina Perri's Jar Of Hearts (a song choice criticised by the panel).
The first show helped Channel 7 hold top ratings spot, pulling 1.452 million viewers.
Bookmakers have Mastin favourite to take this year's title, paying $4.50 for the win, followed by Sydney teen Christina Parie ($5.50), Three Wishez ($6.50) and Coffs Harbour bad boy Mitchell Callaway ($7.50).
